President's Message

“Individual commitment to a group effort…that is what makes a team work, a company work, a society work, a civilization work.”

Vince Lombardi

Hello BWA sisters,

As summer begins to wane you can almost feel the changes about to take place…school busses will appear behind and ahead of us, the stores will start to tout the next holiday way too soon, and yes, the Broward Women’s Alliance has begun its annual membership drive!

By now you should have received your membership renewal request and hopefully have committed to another year of good programs, good food, good friends, and the great mission of supporting women through our Scholarship Program.  We hope you will join our efforts to support deserving women who need and appreciate any financial help to improve their lives by renewing your membership today.

Our first meeting this year lands on the anniversary date of September 11.  The Program Committee looked for ways to commemorate this event in our history and are happy to bring a guest speaker who will address the many issues as we move forward after such an event.   Our guest speaker is a professor of Conflict Resolution at Nova Southeastern University (see below).  So, mark your calendars to join us at the Tower Club for lunch and a meaningful presentation!

The BWA Executive Board encourages current members to bring potential members as guests to introduce them to a year of great programming and comradery.  As a kick-off bonus, there will be no guest fees for this first luncheon meeting.

Diana Dane Plucienkowski

President 2017-2018

Meeting Information

Cheryl Duckworth

Cheryl Duckworth, Ph.D., is a professor of Conflict Resolution at Nova Southeastern University.

Dr. Duckworth has trained hundreds of students, teachers and community leaders in peace education and conflict resolution both in the US and internationally. Currently she serves as the faculty advisor of NSU's Peace Education Working Group and on the Advisory Board of the Hope Development Organization, a women's rights and peace building organization in Pakistan, and Women's Promise, which advocates for and empowers women's leadership for peace globally.

Dr. Duckworth has published and presented globally on her two passions, peace education and peace economics, exploring ways to transform the economic, political, social and psychological root causes of war and violence.  Most recently, she published Teaching About Terror: 9/11 and Collective Memory in US Classrooms, which analyzes the narrative today's students are receiving about 9/11, and the implications of this for global peace and conflict.

Please join us on this historic anniversary to hear Dr. Duckworth’s perspectives and experience on the efforts to create a more peaceful world.

She blogs at Teach for Peace and you can follow her on Twitter @cherylduckworth.

Catalina is director with the law firm of TrippScott, PA and focuses her practice in the areas of labor and employment, and complex commercial litigation.   Avalos has experience representing both plaintiffs and defendants in employment matters and often serves as quasi in-house counsel for various corporate clients providing advice for their employment needs.
