Broward Women's Alliance is a networking organization that promotes opportunities and acceptance of women in positions of leadership; acknowledges the accomplishments of women; and provides support and encouragement for professional development and community enhancement.
Our members are business, professional and community leaders who are in a position to contribute to the mission of the organization and who contribute to the community in a meaningful way, either through a profession, volunteer service or public service (elected or appointed).
Our members serve in an executive decision-making capacity in their business or organization and enjoy an excellent reputation in the community for integrity, leadership and competence. They are aware and concerned about the many issues affecting women today, both in the home and in the business community. The Broward Women's Alliance was formed by individuals who saw a need in the community for a networking group of women who were at the top of their fields business, professional, government, nonprofit and community activists.
In October 1990, a group of South Florida women met at the Left Bank Restaurant with a representative of the Florida Women's Alliance to discuss the possibility of starting a chapter of the Florida Women's Alliance in Broward County.
Following this meeting, several of the Broward women met again at the Riverside Hotel and decided to form the Broward Women's Alliance. The Tower Club was chosen as a meeting place, and the first year, the fledgling organization was small but enthusiastic. Through the year, other women who felt a strong need for a networking organization soon joined the original group.
As the organization grew, more members in leadership positions were proposed for membership.
In the first year, approximately fifty (50) members attended the luncheon meetings. In 1991, luncheons were structured to provide time for self-introductions, announcements and a short presentation by a speaker.
In 1993, bylaws were adopted and the executive committee was expanded. In 1994, the organization registered with the Secretary of State as a not-for-profit Florida corporation, and the first membership directory was produced. In 1995, the newsletter was expanded and BWA became partners with the Tripp Family Fund for the "Women in Transition" scholarship.
In 1996, a Donor Advised Fund was established with the Community Foundation of Broward called the BWA Fund for the Advancement of Women.
The Fund's purpose was designed "To provide funds to women who need support and encouragement for professional development." BWA made a contribution to the Fund in 1996 and again in 1997.
In 1998, the Council of Past Presidents was formed to ensure the continuing involvement of past BWA leadership, and in 1999, the first scholarship for the BWA Fund for the Advancement of Women was awarded.
The original concept of the organization has held true: BWA is a networking group which helps women get together in order to know other women of influence in the community and keep them abreast of community developments and activities.
Broward Women's Alliance continues to grow and expand horizons.
